Nuruddin Farah was born in 1945 in Baidoa, Somalia. His father was a merchant and his mother a poet. He was initially educated in Ogaden in what is now Ethiopia. After leaving the area following serious fighting in the area, he went to study at Panjab University in Chandigarh, India. He published his first novel when he was twenty.
Gifts (1993), the second novel in the Somali writer Nuruddin Farah’s ‘‘Blood in the Sun’’ trilogy, unlocks a wide-ranging critique of the politics of postcolonial autonomy and dependency.

Farah does give a good understanding of the role tradition plays in Somali life, especially with his frame stories about the cow and Juxaa. Perhaps Farah's work as a playwright is better than Gifts, as he is apparently well-praised for his plays.
Farah has ofted dealt the history of his country throught the fates of his characters. The central theme is the women's liberation in postcolonial Somaliland, which he sees as a precondition for political and individual freedom. Nuruddin Farah beautifully shows how ordinary citizens can live with grace in “abnormal times.” That they can achieve it in a city even as far gone as Mogadishu is no mean feat as the book Knots ably proves. Political statements are layered throughout Farah’s writing and his work has earned him a lot of Nobel buzz lately. Nuruddin Farah.
